Selfoss is a wide and scenic waterfall in the Jökulsá á
Fjöllum river, located a few hundred meters south of Dettifoss within
Vatnajökull National Park. Although often overshadowed by its more powerful
neighbor, Selfoss is an impressive waterfall in its own right.
The waterfall is approximately 10 meters high but considerably wider than
it is tall, making it one of the widest waterfalls in Iceland. Water flows
over a gently curved cliff edge in multiple streams, creating a soft and
elegant cascade, especially during periods of high river flow.
The surrounding landscape is rugged and dramatic, shaped by volcanic rock
and the immense forces of the glacial river. A walking path connects
Dettifoss and Selfoss, offering stunning views of the river, canyon, and
surrounding wilderness.
Selfoss is a popular stop for visitors who wish to experience the contrast
between different types of waterfalls, where width and form create a
striking counterpoint to the raw power of nearby falls.
